"Where Lupo the Wolf Goes for Dinner" by Megan Abbott - NYTimes.com

Rao's, y'all familiar? One-time-mobbed-up-maybe-still-is old-school pasta joint in Harlem. I guess some mobster got shot there in '93 and before that in the '70s it was really the shit. Like Carlo Gambino ate there and whatnot. It's supposed to be the hardest table to get in New York and my mom has it's trademarked spaghetti sauce in her refrigerator. I don't know, color me unimpressed. Red sauce Italian joints are red sauce Italian joints. It's hard to improve on a good plate of meatballs or cavatelli and hot sausage, and you can get that shit cheap in a lot of places. I guess if you want to maybe get shot inside a restaurant and definitely get stabbed and/or mugged when you leave this is the spot to go? I dunno, here's it's history though.

P.S. Megan Abbott is a chick crime novelist. I didn't even know they made those. What'll they think of next?

"Meat of the People" by Bryan Curtis - Slate.com

This is an article about Boar's Head, which you all know, but know nothing about. All I know about it is on the off chance that I go to a gross NYC bodega to get a sandwich (usually piss drunk) that little ugly boar's head on the label makes me feel a little bit better about ingesting the sure-fire rat-nibbled dead animal I'm letting the she-man laughing at al-Jazeera news programs behind the counter make me a sandwich with. It's like a seal of approval that the meat you are about to eat did not come from a homeless person. So ... yay, Boar's Head?

http://www.slate.com/articles/life/the_middlebrow/2012/01/boar_s_head_a_search_for_the_soul_of_the_deli_meat_purveyor_.html

P.S. Not joking about the she-man thing. I have no idea if the person behind the counter at my local bodega is a man or a woman. I'd guess it's like 60/40 a woman, but I wouldn't bet a dime on it.

"The Hangover Part III" by Brett Martin - GQ.com

GQ sent a writer to go hang out with Aziz Ansari, David Chang, and LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy while they got fucked up in Tokyo. Assignment was basically go party with these dudes and write about it. And that my friends, is why people want to write for magazines.

Here's where I come down on these cats:

James Murphy: Rockstar and hipster icon. I really like LCD Soundsystem which might make me a hipster but the fact that I just said that makes me not one so eat a dick. "Dance Yrself Clean" is my favorite LCD soundystem song, and sometimes I drink a drink called the James Murphy, which is champagne with a shot of Jameson. In Murphy's words, "the champagne gets you drunk and the whiskey keeps you that way." It doesn't taste gross either, you can hardly taste the whiskey. Sign me up.

David Chang: Founder of Momofuku, or as I like to call it Mo-mo-fuck-you. Hipster icon. I hate this guy. He gets all this love from critics and all these people that think eating his food makes them cool. Meanwhile all he does is slang fat sandwiches disguised as steamed pork rolls in over-priced restaurants that people try to convince you are cheap. Second worst dining experience of my life was at a Momofuckyou. The one on 12th and 2nd. As far as I'm concerned this dick still owes me the 90 bucks he stole from me that night.

Aziz Ansari: First funny Indian guy ever?

p.s. Worst meal I've ever had in NYC was at The Old Homestead steakhouse hands down. Place smells like a dirty shoe, the steak came out cold, and they tried to rip us off on the bill. Go to Keen's instead and thank me later.

"McDonald's International Menu" by Elizabeth Gunnison - Esquire.com

I've shat on Esquire's "Eat Like a Man" blogger, Elizabeth Gunnison--I repeat: "Eat Like a Man" blogger, Elizabeth Gunnison--before. But I actually really enjoyed this quick hitter. A round up of the best things McDonalds around the world serve.

In short: That German brat sando looks truthful. I had no idea the Dutch were so ill of health. And the Philippines needs to clean that shit up. Spaghetti and hot dogs with a chicken drumstick as an optional side? I'm not gonna say it's gross because it doesn't sound like a bad meal to snort drunk. But honestly Philippines, act like you've been there before.

"Diner for Schmucks" by Alan Richman - GQ.com

This is a great article for anyone who has ever wanted to be a food critic. Really gives an insider's view as to what it's like. Also completely eviscerates this restaurant M. Wells in Queens, where Richman, a long-time food journalist, experienced something he's never quite had happen to him before.

"It Was Delicious While It Lasted" by Jay McInerney - VanityFair.com

I really dig Jay McInerney. For those of you not familiar, he was a hotshot author in the 80's who ran around Manhattan partying with celebrities and basically putting the city on its back. Check out Bright Lights, Big City if you want to know more. It's the only book written in the second person that's worth reading, with no due respect to Ayn Rand.

Here he profiles the Spanish restaurant El Bulli, which is closing down, and which has been pretty much unanimously considered the best restaurant in the world for as long as I've been reading about that kind of stuff. The chef, Ferran Adria, is considered a genius, and I'm pretty sure Anthony Bourdain would take a shot in the mouth from him and say thank you.

On that appetizing note, bon appetit:

"How to Roast a Pig" by Elizabeth Gunnison - Esquire.com

Can anybody find me a goddam apartment in brooklyn? One bedroom in wburg, greenpoint, or dumbo. $2650 is the rent limit and I need outdoor space so my girlfriend can grow delicious herbs that I put in sauces and cocktails. Is that too much to ask? Brooklyn is on some real bullshit right now. Some real bullshit.

Here's how to cook a whole pig written by some 26-year-old chick that got hired to write a regular column for Esquire called "Eat Like a Man". I will now proceed to slam my head into a coffee table until I wake up and it's tomorrow.

"The Man Who Will Cook You Anything" by Adam K. Raymond - Esquire.com

Some carnie out in Cali will cook any animal he can get his small disgusting carnie hands on for you. Lion, maggot, gator, it doesn't matter to this dude. And really it shouldn't matter to you.* Meat is meat is meat. I ate a live conch dick the other day. No big deal. I'm not trying to brag. I'm just tough like that. "Hey kid you want some conch dick? " he says. "Sure," I say. And slurp that shit down. Tastes like salty spaghetti. Also immediately got hard. It's basically natures Viagra.

But my boner is neither here nor there you sick animals so stop thinking about it. All I'm trying to say to you, is I will slap some Frank's hot sauce on a black bear burger and wolf it down so fast it'll make your head spin, and that's all I know.

*Except maggots. People who eat maggots are worthless.

"Rinderpest, Scourge of Cattle, Is Vanquished" by Donald G. McNeil Jr.

Welp, y'all can breathe easy now. They finally got rid of Rinderpest, the deadly cattle disease. Not even joking this is kind of a big deal. Last time they eradicated a disease it was smallpox, and that was in like, christ? The fifties? This is only the second one they've ever done completely away with. And though it only effects cattle, think about that. Really. A disease that can kill 95% of cloven-hoofed herds can have an enormous effect on herding and farming populations who depend on them for milk and meat (not to mention us, enjoying our porterhouse and schlag at Luger's). And apparently this disease has literally changed the course of history. Helping Genghis Khan and hindering Alexander in their quests for world domination. And now it's gone.

Weird shit to think about I know, but give it a shot. It's cool.

"Why Is It So Hard to Get a Good Bagel Outside of New York City?" by Brian Palmer - Slate.com

It's not the water. It's actually shockingly simple. Kinda makes me think I should start a bagel store somewhere that's not NYC.

"An Ode (Sort Of) on the Demise of Elaine's" by John Mariani - Esquire.com

So this bar/restaurant named Elaine's on the Upper East Side was basically everything any like downtown, try-to-be-cool club/lounge in New York could ever try to be. It really set the bar, no pun intended. In his prime, Woody Allen ate dinner there every night for ten years. That's what he claims anyway, but I call bullshit because that's impossible.

The restaurant's success (it had middling food) was due to it's owner Elaine Kaufman, who ran the place like a tough-but-beloved mother. In the early days, she would let writers come in and eat, and if they couldn't pay, she'd take a risk and let them skip the bill. It paid off big-time when those same young regulars turned into literary stars like David Halberstam, Thomas Wolfe, and the dude who wrote Forrest Gump. She recently passed away and the restaurant is closing next week. A real great piece of New York History, or any history for that matter, here.

"Tom Collichio's Life After Top Chef" by Scott Raab - Esquire.com

Collichio's just such a solid product of the great state of New Jersey. An blue-collar, Italian cat who decided what to be and went out and became it. Nothing not to like there. Here he discusses his career, balancing his family life, and of course, good food.
