This is Laird Hamilton's new workout column for Men's Journal. Can't really argue with anything the guy says, physically speaking he is closer to a God than maybe anyone on the planet. It's like him and Lebron in my book. Maybe Gronk.
Here he espouses the value of headstands, which is funny because yesterday I did a headstand in my living room, tweaked something in my back HARD, and ended up on the floor in the fetal position for a full five minutes. Haha, funny coincidence! Sometimes I get weird.

"Are We Living in the Golden Age of Male Objectification?" by Joe Reid - Gawker.com
Gawker wonders if we've progressed to the point where Hollywood will start paying as much attention to the male body as the female body. The answer's no. Not at all. But probably a lot more than in years past.
Muscles are in bros. Hit the weight room. Curls for the girls. More plates more dates. More reps more boobs*. All of that.
*I just made that up on the spot. Pretty good, gonna use it in real life.

''Heavy Lifting, No Rest, Candy: The Bulgarian Method" by Hannah Karp - WSJ.com
Confession: I'm a closet meathead. I love to lift weights. I do. In fact, on my tombstone, one of the three things that I'd like written is "He knew his pecs." The other two are "He looked good in pants." and "He was always right." All three statements are truer than Jesus's love for sinners. That's just how it is.
That being said, I think this article is worthwhile for Poop Readers because it's about weightlifting but it's not about weightlifting at all. It's about a Bulgarian power lifting coach who dominated the sport in the 70s and 80s with an unorthodox training regimen, who is now living in the US and trying to spread his gospel. It's as American a story as there is. While also being about a total foreigner with wacky foreigner ideas.

"Why I Think Steroids Are Out of Baseball" by Joe Posnanski - SI.com
Joe Posnanski thinks juice is out of baseball. Maybe. I don't really know. Players do seem flabbier these days. A-Rod is built like a normal human being now and not like the centaur he thought he used to look like.
In other news, I just had dinner at Southern Hospitality, and the bartender mistook my girlfriend for Nick Swisher's fiance except I looked her up and L-Boogie is better looking. So stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

"Gym Rat Control" by Luke O'Neil - Slate.com
So this gym Planet Fitness is outlawing meatheads in their gym? I don't get it. No heavy weights, alarms go off when people grunt too loudly, candy at the front desk. Allow me to clear my throat and ask. What. The. Fuck? They should just call it Planet Weak Coward and get it over with. I mean, what is this shit? Seriously? I want to know. Oh right, that's why I read the article.

p.s. I had no idea the "I pick things up and I put them down" line was from commercials for this gym. My buddy chuck has been playing me the fuck out it seems. Hey Chuck, you're fat bro. Let's go camping.

"Inside Baseball" by Dan Shaughnessy - SI.com
This quote from the article sums it up just about right.
"Manny could really hit, but he never cared. Neither should you."

"The World's Healthiest 75 Year Old Man" by Susan Casey - Esquire.com
I read this piece a few years back and it really stuck with me. Made me feel like a pussy actually. This 75 year old dude in California runs a fitness boot camp that would make Chuck Norris cry. Bad ass. He trains the likes of big-wave surfer Laird Hamilton and actor John C. McGinley.
Weird career for that McGinley fella huh? Bursts onto the scene as one of Oliver Stone's favorite young actors in movies like Platoon and Wall Street, then disappears. Then he shows up like a decade and a half later as the dickhead boss on Scrubs. Crazy world. Crazy times.
