"The State of the Female Singer' By Tom Junod - Esquire.com

I always thought Tom Junod was my dad's age. Was I wrong? How is he speaking intelligently on Lana Del Rey? I'm confused.

Anyway, I use the term "intelligently" loosely, because while Junod is usually dead on point, he can not sit there with a straight face and tell me that Lana Del Rey is a better singer than Florence Whateverthefuck of Florence + The Machine. That's just wrongheaded.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not a Del Rey hater. She's hot and she sounds good in recordings if not on live TV. And I could give a fuck less about her stupid "authenticity." Blue Jeans is a dope song. But Dog Days Are Over is a force of fucking nature. That was probably the best song of 2010. Can't just sweep that shit under the rug because some other singer has an unparalleled set of blowjob lips. Shame on you, Tom Junod.

"Warren Buffet, American" by Tom Junod - Esquire.com

Look I don't claim to be no financial expert. You lock me in a room with a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and only one of us is coming out alive. But this story about Buffet really struck a cord with me and just seems to make a lot of sense. The author theorizes that men like Buffet are truly the champions of capitalism and that these OWS hipsters wouldn't have call to be so mad if the rich made their money more like he did. You know, invest in actual products and companies instead of glorified get-rich-quick Ponzi schemes. I'm sure that's simplified as hell, but at times like these, something simple seems about right, does it not?

"Eleven Lives" by Tom Junod - Esquire.com

A year after the BP Oil Spill, Tom Junod, who continues to set the standard in my mind for serious magazine writing, reminds us that it wasn't just pelicans that suffered from the disaster. Eleven men died the day the well blew, and the reverberations were felt well past six-degrees deep.
